On the 12th August, family members, friends and representatives from Oyster Indoor Bowls Club in Whitstable bid a final, sad farewell to Eva Foster Newman at a Service of Committal and Thanksgiving, at Barham Crematorium.
Eva, and her husband Peter, were heavily involved in instigating the birth of Oyster Indoor Bowls Club, even registering the club at their home address whilst battling with the Council to secure a permanent venue. An old ‘cash & carry’ warehouse at Whitstable Harbour was eventually offered, which eventually became the club we all now know and love. To prepare the club for opening, many of the founding members signed up for 10-year loans, (which were all paid back within 8 years), such was the commitment to get it up and running. As well as being a regular bowler, Eva helped out with all aspects of running the club, including, she recalls, scrubbing floors, and rose to become Vice Chair of the club before she retired due to ill health.
Eva passed away on 17 July and her Service of Committal and Thanksgiving, was held at Barham Crematorium on Tuesday 12 August, followed by a wake at Oyster Indoor Bowls Club. She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered.
