Bowls Etiquette

Introduction

Welcome to the world of indoor bowls! Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer, understanding the etiquette of the game is crucial. Indoor bowls is a sport that requires not only skill and strategy, but also a certain level of decorum. Listed below are some of the main tips of etiquette that allows all players to enjoy the game.

  • Be on time for your match.
  • Switch off your mobile phone.
  • Adhere to the prescribed dress code.
  • Greet not only your opponent(s) but your team mates as well (a hand shake may not be the appropriate form in these post covid days).
  • Always be courteous to all players and guests throughout the match.
  • Always be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.
  • Respect the playing surface; try not to drop bowls onto the green and always wear the correct footwear.
  • Don’t distract your opponent when they are playing and keep out of their line of vision when they are delivering a bowl, by standing behind the mat.
  • Remain focused and keep high levels of concentration throughout the match.
  • Do not walk across mats that other people are using.
  • Keep track of play; be ready to bowl when it is your turn.
  • Avoid obscuring the rink number, rink markers or the jack (no white shoes behind the jack).
  • Be aware of what is happening around you, possibly on adjacent rinks.
  • Do not wander onto adjacent rinks.
  • Never applaud lucky shots, never complain about lucky shots, and admit a lucky shot with good grace.
  • Do not thank an opponent for a bad shot that goes your way.
  • Avoid interfering with the head until the results of the end have been agreed upon by the vice skips.
  • When changing ends, walk up the centre of the rink with minimum delay.
  • If it is not your team’s turn to bowl do not stop to chat in the middle of the rink, you don’t have rink possession.
